Are We Greed?

25th June 2008

Gandhi once said something to remind us all, human kind:

The earth provides every man’s needs, but not every man’s greeds.

One Change Does Make A Difference

23rd June 2008

One thing we ALL can learn from Sophie Uliano, author of Gorgeously Green: 8 Small Steps to an Earth-Friendly Life, as what she said:

If I make one tiny positive change today, I consider myself green. It can be as simple as flicking off a light switch or buying an organic apple. My motto is one change makes a difference, and if you can make two, that’s even better!

BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag)

8th June 2008

A nice, inspiring green ‘campaign’ from Leonardo DiCaprio’s web site (found via Ninit Yunita’s blog):

BYOB - in other words Bring Your Own Bag with you to the grocery store, farmers market, and retail stores. Not only will you be reducing the amount of plastic you are consuming but you will be showing fellow shoppers, and store owners how easy it is to stop using plastic.

Our planet is choking on plastic, but you can make a difference.

Why Is It (Pretty) Hard to Practice Green Living?

5th March 2008

{This post is cross-posted at BlogHer

It’s been several months I practice a greener life in almost everything I do, including when shopping. When planning to buy many goods or only some goods but they are big in sizes, I always bring my cotton shopping bag. When I go to some stores at the spur-of-the-moment, I use my old plastic bags that I always carry inside my work bag.

It is so true that lots of times it’s pretty hard to be different.

It’s pretty hard to be the only woman who wears headscarf while others around you don’t.

It’s pretty hard to be the only person who brings drinking flask to work and get your working partners stare at your flask, as if you can read their minds, “Only kindergarten pupils here in town who bring flasks.”

Well, yes, it is apparently pretty hard to be the only person on the store cashier that says no to plastic bags, even before the cashierperson takes the plastics to put all your stuff you buy into them.

Sometimes the cashierperson before me gruntles and sometimes looks freakingly confused.

Actually, the cashierpersons are not the only people who always give me a “what is this person trying to do, saying no to plastic bags, while I’m here trying to be nice to put her goods into the store plastic bags?” look, but other customers of the stores also.

So, looks like my problem in trying to be a greener shopper (in terms of the use of shopping bag, for this matter) isn’t about my preference of the shopping bag, but about how other people might think about my preference. But so far, I’m pretty glad to be different :)

Tell Me What, Who, and Where

5th March 2008

It isn’t enough to make a green product if no one knows about it.
Thryn

It seems so easy to get (pretty good) ‘green’ (earth-friendly) products out there in Western countries. You know why?

Because they socialize what they produce.

Menstrual cup (yes, lots of women now replace tampons with menstrual cups).

Fair-trade chocolate.

Furnitures made from sustainable woods.

Recycled papers.

Just all things green.

I’m pretty certain that Indonesia has people who produce some green products. So, for you who know what eco-friendly products that do exist here, who produces them, and where people can get them, please be kind to inform us all :)
